Two Charged in Hoot Owl Murder

by Brandon Dye
Staff Reporter

Two men have been arrested in connection with a stabbing death that occurred at the Appalachian Inn on Hoot Owl Road last Wednesday night.
Brothers Johnny Michael Peck, 38, and Carlos Lee Peck, 37, have been charged with first degree murder in the death of Eric Stuart Kyle, 35, of Vansant, who died from stab wounds and a cut throat, according to Buchanan County Commonwealth's Attorney Tamara Neo. The two brothers were also charged with conspiracy to commit a felony.
On Wednesday, January 2 at 10:59 p.m., the Grundy Police Department responded to a 911 call made by Beverly Harris, of a reported domestic assault in progress.
Grundy police officer Aaron Fletcher arrived at the scene at 11:03 p.m. where he found Kyle lying dead in the parking lot of the facility, according to Grundy Police Chief Mike Cox.

Neo, Board Clash on Fate of Victim Witness Position
All Full-Time County Employment Openings Will Now Be Advertised

by Scotty Wampler
News Editor

Newly-elected Buchanan County Commonwealth's Attorney Tamara Neo introduced her staff to the board of supervisors Monday, receiving mixed feelings on her choice for the office's victim witness coordinator.
Endorsing Ann Randolph as her choice to succeed Stephanie Webb as victim witness coordinator for the commonwealth's attorney's office, Neo described Randolph as having the type of personality necessary to fill the role. The board of supervisors must approve a personnel change for that particular position.
Webb, who wrote the grant that funds the victim witness position, according to Neo, still holds the position and remains employed in the commonwealth's attorney's office.
Dollie Compton (office manager), former circuit court clerk for Russell County, and Tucker Davis (community outreach coordinator) were also introduced by Neo at the meeting.
"I see no reason to make a change in that position," North Grundy Chairman Carroll Branham said, asking Neo how she came to determine that Webb couldn't fill the duties of the position.
